I am working on a computer for a family member that seems to have every virus known to man. The problem is that there is a virus that is stopping the antivirus programs from downloading new definitions. Adaware, spybot, norton.... none of them can download new virus definitions. It had a virus that disabled task manager, but I fixed that. Nothing looks suspicious in the processes. Has any one dealt with this before? How can I fix it?

Avoid further headaches and waste of time....reformat and reinstall xp

The computer did not come with an xp disk.

for now just use the updates that come with the programs, at least use ccleaner, cleanup, and go thru msconfig>startup and then post a hijackthis log

also when spybot sd tries to update i get this error "error retrieving update info file! socket error# 10061
connection refused."
windows fire wall is not on.
although i did run security task manager and some norton processes are running but i cant get rid of them because it says i am not on the admin account even though i am.

you need to uninstall java and then go to java.com: Hot Games, Cool Apps to download the latest version

make sure you have the latest version of spybot. When updating, choose one update at a time and then update it. I have seen thise before and it works most of the time if you select one and then update them individualy.

i uninstalled java but when i try to reinstall it from the link you posted i get this error: "the installer cannot proceed with the current internet proxy settings. please check the installer notes for more information." I will skip installing java for now and try the other things you suggested
