Default Internet Explorer Message

I dialled into my internet the other day, bt openworld, and opened the explorer . A "Privacy Violation" Internet Explorer message came up telling me that my IP address had been obtained and that my web usage is being monitered and if I click on this Special offer link, i can download software etc etc. What is happening. Is this Spyware/Adware ? , some sort of Con.If so, how do i get rid of it. It only happened yesterday and i am worried incase other information will be disclosed to whoever is doing this, like logins for online banking etc.Unfortunately i also found out that my anti-virus is NOT up-to-date! Could this be a problem aswell? Any help/feedback would be much appreciated........
