Default Internet Explorer briefly hangs

Having an unusal problem. When I first open internet explorer, the home page comes up, everything finishes loading(at least graphic wise) then the program hangs for 10-20 seconds. The graphical loading progress bar on the bottom of the browser is still up and showing full bars, but the bottom right says "done" If you click on any of the links, after the 20seconds it will catchup with whatever you clicked.
However the next page that loads repeats this process. Another twist to this, if you use Windows Explorer or open "My Computer" and in the address bar there, enter a website address, browsing is fine, no delay whatsoever.
The System is a P4 2.4 running Wndows xp home with 256megs of ram. Virus scan is up to date (mcafee), ad ware has been run, and is patch to the hilt from windows update. Kinda out of ideas.

Thx for the help,
Clayton

I have only one thing to say: Switch to Opera or Mozilla, because these two browsers are faster, more reliable and dont have that problems like IE with large numbers of critical updates, security holes amd so on...
I recommend Mozilla 1.6
