What version of AVG you on? Atapi.sys is a legit system file related to the CD drive so dont remove it.

I'm using version 9.0.698 the latest version (Free edition)

I just used the MSE and I think it might have disinfected it? History shows

Virus:Win32/Alureon.A

Hes right it is a system file, but it is also possible that the file itself has been infected, the only real way to know is to post a malwarebytes log and or a hijackthis log.

And at worst case, reformat. If your still paranoid thats its not legit..

Hi my names Chris,

I've got exactly the same problem as this guy. Whenever I try to insert a disk or usb drive I get the following warning:

[IMG]<a href="http://s454.photobucket.com/albums/qq263/crispy12a/?action=view&current=Capture.png" target="_blank"><img src="http://i454.photobucket.com/albums/qq263/crispy12a/Capture.png" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>[/IMG]

Followed by a BSOD with the following code:

*** STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC00000005,0x8203E7D3, 0x8AC0F60C, 0x8AC0F1F0)

I've just run Malwarebyte's Anti Malware scan and it comes up saying I've no malware on my system! Is this strange?

Also now run a Hijack this scan and the following results came up:

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2
Scan saved at 00:32:20, on 11/11/2009

I don't really know what to do now. I've tried a system restore but I didn't work, my computer had a BSOD right after the system restore and it said it was unsuccessful.

Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks

I beleive you are having a driver issue with the CD/DVD drive, atapi.sys belongs to the CD drive.

Can you boot into safemode?

Yeah I can boot into safe mode.

The BSOD still comes though in safe mode whenever I insert a CD/DVD or USB drive.

Go to the device manager and disable or uninstall the CD/DVD drive, then reboot into normal mode and let me know if you still get a BSOD

Ok Ive done that. Still get the same BSOD when inserting the CD. I've noticed though that by holding 'shift' to prevent auto run the BSOD doesn't come up. If I then click the option to open the disk however (A DVD movie in this case) the BSOD comes then.

Follow this Disable Autorun/Autoplay In Windows 7

Then reboot and test again.

Also see if the USB drive has an autorun.ini file, if so delete it as well.
