Default Bogus Update Popups

What's to stop a virus from coming into a your system through a bogus update popup? In object programming a popup of any design could be made ready to run an executable click.

Microsoft was notorious for not identifying itself when their 1/2in X 3 popup window would popup waiting me to action something. I'd look frantically for an identifying signature that made them unique. There messages were also notorious for ambiguity. "File is corrupted".......Huhhhhh????
Programmers have access to a wide suite of commands that could be assessed that describe the file, but it never occured to them to pass the info on. This way they can reuse the popup for various reasons without hard coding file particulars, lazy man's programming.
