| why is my connection so slow? first of all, according to my linksys router, there is no one else on the network. since i've been home from college for the summer, my parent's 6mbps connection is, at most times, incredibly slow. the connection speed at certain times of the day (coincidentally, society's "busy" times of the day) is akin to what you would imagine i would be experiencing if i was file-sharing.
from SpeedTest.net
(3497down, 333up)
even with that, it is slow. for example, when i ping google during the afternoon (about this time) the avg response time has been 150ms+.. but if i log on at like 2a.m google's response time is a normal 40ms or less (& a speedtest.net test will give me a reasonable 5000kbps down). is it time they switch service providers or am i missing something? thanks in advance. |

| Re: why is my connection so slow? You're on Charter, that's why.
Charter, well any cable company, oversells their capacity knowing not everyone will be on at one time. I would almost lay money you live in a college town, or where there are a lot of schools that are now out for the summer? Their connection is being pulled down by all the traffic.
Sorry, but there's nothing you can do about it. |

| Re: why is my connection so slow? Charter is just like Road Runner. I am supposted to get 4mb/s and i am lucky to get half of that. On a good day with no traffic.
They bottleneck everybody and piggy back them. With Cable being the new provider for internetn to most people it is becoming more of a issue.

| Re: why is my connection so slow? DSL is good if you are close enough to the node to get 3M or 6M speed. My connection is supposed to be 1.5M, and I pull 1.2-1.3M, so I'm happy enough. Hopefully they will get some upgrades in place soon and I will move to 3M for $5 more. |

| Re: why is my connection so slow? Well i moved and i am not in such a rural area and my speeds are up to where they should be. Being in a populated area your best option would be fibre since it is a dedicated line for you only.
Other than that you will always be sharing be it Cable or DSL.

| I don't know whether it's because of loops, or continuously routed packets, but resetting my router when my net is slow works for me too. I also do a /release /renew when I reset too.

| Re: why is my connection so slow? yes, i have. anyway, i had a isp techguy come by today and basically try to tell me nothing was wrong. it was five o'clock (he was supposed to get there at noon) and he was clearly interested in going home. I had to forcefully direct him towards what i am talking about (200+ms ping) and he simply procedes to tell me the gateway is overloaded (well no ****?) and there is nothing he can do about it. i simply tell him i'm not interested in paying for crappy service. so now i'm browsing around for a new isp. too bad there is nothing higher than 5mbps where i'm at (southern texas) and the next alternative is another cable service.. on which i'd probably experience the same problem. any recomendations? |
