Default problems with IE8

I am trying to install IE 8 on a computer and for some reason now whenever I run IE, my computer will freeze up. Does anybody know why this could be happening?

Same thing happens with my wife's computer (XP Home SP3). Well, that should be past tense, happened. I uninstalled it. Besides, she uses Firefox exclusively.

Ever since I installed IE8 last week my pc has a tendency to slow right down at times. Thinking of ditching it completely. Can't think of anything else to blame it on as I haven't installed anything else.
