Is this being seen on XP or Vista? Lately IE 7 has been seeing bugs there on Vista where turning off the DEP(data execution protection) cleared the sudden inability to log onto the home page while Vista's Wndows Mail(formerly Outllok Express) would open right up as usual.

For Vista to see this problem corrected with the latest updates on first open up the accessories>command prompt and type the following. "bcdedit/set nx AlwaysOff" like you see this here. You will see a confirmation when it is turned off at that time.

The boot.ini file is one way along with the other information MS provides like

If you are logged on as an administrator, you can manually configure DEP to switch between the OptIn and OptOut policies by using the Data Execution Prevention tab in System Properties. The following procedure describes how to manually configure DEP on the computer: 1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
2. On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.
3. On the Data Execution Prevention tab, use one of the following procedures: • Click Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only to select the OptIn policy.
• Click Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select to select the OptOut policy, and then click Add to add the programs that you do not want to use the DEP feature.

4. Click OK two times.
A detailed description of the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) feature in Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005, and Windows Server 2003

The same two options are also seen in Vista but are useless. In XP follow the instructions for modifying the boot.ini file seen there. Vista now sees the bcd editor used for the new type of boot loader seen there. But that worked when tried in Vista.

XP never saw this problem here at all however except for when IE 7 was still in beta form there was a problem when tried where I simply dumped it until the finished version came out. When going to edit the boot.ini first make a backup copy and save that to a folder.

If currently not seen at the root of C go into the tools>folder options in any explorer window to uncheck the hide protected system files option. Once seen simply right click for properties and uncheck the read only box, close it, and then double click on the file to see it opened up by NotePad. When going to save and overwrite the original choose the save as all files not txt option.

You can always reverse this by either unchecking the read only again after rechecking it following the mod to re-edit or simply overwrite by copy+paste of the saved copy. If the mod doesn't work something else be would then need to be tried before sonsidering the repair install of Windows option.

You can select certain programs you install from being effected by the DEP process but it won't work for IE 7! With the boot.ini file method outlined on the MS page you can always reverse the process with another edit of the boot, ini file.

The second of the two seen in the advanced you named there was tried out in Vista to get nowhere already. I still had to switch off the DEP itself to see IE 7 working again.

This is I suggested the other method in case that doesn't work for you there with XP. When that was tried here the iexplorer.exe file itself vanished without a trace!

The other option besides the edit of the boot.ini file would be using the system restore feature if you still have any restore points prior to when the problem was first seen. That will restore the system registry to see if that will work better.

Hopefully that will continue since you found that those addons turned out to be at least one source of the problem. With one installation of Vista here every system restart still sees the need to open up a window for the bcdedit.exe/set mx AlwaysOff command in order to get online.

Fortunately that's being seen on a drive removed and then had to be reinstalled just to see more files saved from it. But if you run into anyone else you know having log on probelms running Vista tell them about the manual method used here for a temporary period anyways.

I have DEP turned off on Vista with no problem. I think you made this way to complicated. It seems to me that all he had to do was remove teh add-ons.

He just then mentioned addons. But he's not running Vista but XP there. In Vista the bcdeditor is what is easier while in XP a fast edit with NotePad will see the DEP kept off.

As far as addons those often leave you wide open for adwares and other garbage which can end up with even more problems.
