phpbb attacked!!

I went to the phpbb main site a few minutes ago to check out some things for setting my own boards up only to find that they had been hacked.

For anyone who doesn't know, the phpbb group makes an excellent free forum system.

I have run phpbb's forum system for around 7 months and am appauled that anyone would attack such an admirable institution. They give webmasters a lot and ask nothing in return. Hmm, well I guess it was inevitable that someone would want to attack them, but I don't see why one would want to do so. The challange? They could have ahcked the site, done nothing, then told the admins about how they did it. Far more productive.
