Default Opera Ad Filtering

How to use the opera ad filter.

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A URLFILTER.INI IN YOUR PROFILE FOLDER IT MEANS YOU HAVEN'T BLOCKED ANYTHING YET. EXTRACT MINE AND PLACE IT IN THERE

Firstly: your urlfilter.ini file will be in one of these 2 places:

1: \documents and settings\username\Application Data\Opera\profile

or

2: \program files\Opera\Profile

Here is a rough introduction of how editing this file works:

Quote:
Opera Preferences version 2.1
; Do not edit this file while Opera is running
; This file is stored in UTF-8 encoding

[prefs]prioritize excludelist=1

THIS DECIDES WHETHER BLOCKED ENTRIES TAKE PRIORITY OVER WHITELISTED ENTRIES. IF YOU WISH TO BLOCK ACCESS TO WHOLE DOMAINS BUT ALLOW CERTAIN IMAGES FROM THEM SET THIS TO 0

[include]
*
THIS IS A LIST OF URL'S OR FILES THAT WILL ALWAYS BE ALLOWED REGARDLESS OF WHAT IS BLOCKED

[exclude]

EVERYTHING BELOW THIS LINE WILL BE BLOCKED FROM LOADING BY THE OPERA BROWSER

Ever wanted to block annoying ads? Wanted to block access to specific pages, or files? Well here is an example of how to use the Opera ad filter

Blocking a specific image/file:

Say you want to block a website from trying to download a file to your machine (E.G. the .exe that tries to download on keygen.us): add a line similar to below, below the area that says [exclude], always if possible adding your entry right at the end of the file, and never put more than one entry per line. This will work for anything that loads into a web page, whether it be a dynamic PHP script, an image, or an install-on-the fly EXE file

Code:
http://www.domain.com/filename.something

If you would like to block access to an entire domain (I.E. Everything on a website use the following (again, below [exclude])

Code:
http://www.domain.com/*
N.B: Without the star this will not work

If you would like to block a subdomain use the following method:

Code:
http://something.somedomain.com/*
Or:

Code:
http://www.somedomain.com/someplace/*
And finally if you would like to add access to a specific file, but block the rest of the domain it is already hosted on, block the domain using the methods described above, then do the following:

Open the urlfilter.ini file and add the entry of the file you want to remain unblocked, by opening the ad filter, and adding all whitelisted files between the following entries in the INI file (again 1 per line):

[include]
*

[exclude]

Please note: it is only necessary to do this if you want to allow specific files from a blocked domain. You do not need to whitelist every site you visit.

N.B: Don't edit the urlfilter.ini file whilst the browser is running. A urlfilter.ini file has been attatched to this post with a lot of the most common advertising websites on the internet added to its filter list.
