Default Little bit of email server advice / help

Hi all,

First post here, sorry the first one is a question, but I need a little bit of advice or help (mainly a general kick up the backside in the right direction).

I have a domain name I've registered, which all the web content for the site is hosted on a VPS I'm subscribed to. I'd like to setup email for the domain name as well, but I'd like to pass the email through a email server that I control (usernames / passwords etc). I can't afford Exchange (or anything to be honest) so I'd like to see if I could get some kind of email server installed on out virtual server which I can then point the MX records for the domain straight at, then get users to log on with their email clients and download their email via POP3 (and have the ability to send email using the email server's SMTP server as well).

Thanks in advance to anyone that can offer help or advice.

When you say you can't afford an exchange server, I guess you're looking at a free solution?

Cheers,

Sorry Tkey, I should have been more specific, yes a freeware solution would be magic.

Thanks.

Right, I have done a little searching for you and i'm only able to find a couple of paid options (considerably cheeper than MS o/c ) and a few freeware options.
There is aso an option for a free trial by the looks of things so it must be worth a shot.

IceWarp eMail Server Software
Download SMTP Server Pro, SMTP Server Pro 3.03 Download

You also did not specify the OS you wish to run this mail server on, therefore i'v assumed you're running a Linux / UNIX based system.

If so the following is a freeware solution that may be of some use
Download AXIGEN Mail Server Office Edition Free, AXIGEN Mail Server Office Edition Free 6.1.0 Download

But if you're running a windows system this one may suit (a freeware option, also)
Download Macallan Mail Solution, Macallan Mail Solution 4.9.01.006 Download

Cheers,

~ Tkey
