| IE6: Favorites button links to search, no favorites I have a user whose workstation has a peculiar problem.
In IE6, he can hit the search button (to the right of back/forward/stop/refresh/home) and get the lovely little search assistant dog. Cool. The problem is, when he hits the favorites button, the same search box/dog shows up on the right, instead of favorites.
Also, clicking the favorites button on the File/Edit/View (etc) line (can't remember what this part's called) it shows only Add to Favorites and Organize Favorites.
User accounts are server-based, but data such as favorites are local. It only affects his machine, and he should be in the same user group/group policy as everyone else in his department.
Any hints? I've had poor luck on Google, not knowing exactly how to word my search.

| Re: IE6: Favorites button links to search, no favorites Well my first thing to say would be that the Favorites Button link is messed up.
I would then say that their favorites have been deleted or got lost due to corruption if they are not listed anymore.
I would also say that IE6 is very outdated and hasnt had any patches since IE7 became a required update. Might be time to consider updating to get your internet browsing secure.

| Re: IE6: Favorites button links to search, no favorites This is just one workstation out of very many in a semi-enterprise environment. Everything's locked down to keep them out of trouble. All computers are currently on IE6, and I haven't yet decided to update every machine, with fear of many complaints. Just don't want to delve into that yet.
On a semi-related note, I still use 6 at home, don't so much like 7. MS doesn't drop security as a priority even though it's an "old" release.
I won't be able to try until tomorrow (maybe), but perhaps just a deletion of his user profile (locally, on his machine), and therefore making a new one next time he logs on, will fix the problem? I'll obviously make sure he doesn't have any important crap on his desktop or elsewere.. He shouldn't, technically.

| Re: IE6: Favorites button links to search, no favorites You can always just try to create a new user account for him and see if it works. If it does can just import his old profile to the new one. The Best Cd Ripper Period

| Re: IE6: Favorites button links to search, no favorites If you don't like IE7 I suggest you try another browser at least. Firefox, Opera etc. IE6 just isn't safe at all anymore. I've switched a couple of law firms from IE6 to Opera 9.5 and they complained at first but now are glad I did.
I would say set the new account up and transfer only his needed files and documents. |

I would say set the new account up and transfer only his needed files and documents. | We've got everything locked down pretty tight, there's no reason to really even have a browser except for stuff that's in our local intranet. They're on a whitelist and basically can't go to any outside sites. It's also just a bad time to even think about changing browsers, it's just a little cruddy problem needing a quick fix. He just has to type in "webmail" and such instead of clicking from his favorites. I haven't had a chance to get to him yet, as I've got a whole lot of group policy crap to delve through, but we'll see.
So, another quick question: if I open up that windows update, and allow IE7 to install, will there be any reprocussions on the server side? Will all my policies and stuff still go through just fine?
