I'm a somewhat astute techie trying to help a friend with her PC. When she runs IE 7, and tries to click on any hyperlink, IE hangs. I also fround that when I tried to download any file using IE 7, it aborted - every time. She is running XP with SP2 and IE 7 with latest updates
.
Before I arrived, she was not having any problems until Comcast took over from Adelphia and they installed a new cable modem, tool bar and I maybe their own IE version. She then complained to Comcast about having problems and the guy came back out and installed AVAST anti-virus and said he found some virus and fixed them. I'm not familiar with AVAST, but didn't see any new viruses in the logs or scans.
Since I was not able to download any files with her IE, I took my own set of PC tools on a CD and installed Firefox, Opera, Sypbolt, Hijackthis, other tools, and a new IE 7.0. I deinsalled Comcast's tool bar, de-insalled IE 7.0 and reinstalled it. (I noticed IE 6.0 was stilled installed and didn't uninstall it). After installing a clean IE 7.0 and updateing it, I got the same problem. Firefox and Opera runs find, IE can't download any file or go to any hyperlink in a web page. It either hangs for fails with some exception.
The IE failure iexception ndicated a problem wiht urlmom.dll and a posting on microsoft web site suggested re-registing it and other dll's. I tried to re-register the list of dll's microsoft suggested and they all worked but mshtml.dll which failed to register.
I ran most of the antispyware tools and found nothing. I do have a hijack log that I will post if anybody thinks it may help. I didn't see anything, but I'm not a hijack expert.
I'm inclined to deinstall avast and run avg. (I don't like running two anti-virus software at the same time.) What do you think if this approach? Any other help or suggestion would be appreciated.
Thanks
