Default dns server

hey y'all, i got a question for you guys:

why would you need to use dns servers on some dial up configurations, but not on others? please give details...

It depends on the connection you are obtaining.
But 99% of the time, you need to associate with a DNS.
With a dial-up connection, this is usually provided to you. Once you connect, click start > run > command > type ipconfig /all and you'll see the DNS configured for you.
