It's hard to answer your question. All you said was "i have cable internet." Who is your host provider? What operating system do you have? In fact, what are the specs of your PC? How often does it do this? Every time you play, or once every...hour?

It could be do to the fact that you have a bunch of other programs running in the background. What do you have running?
In the worst-case scenario, you have a virus. But I seriously doubt that because nobody would make a virus that interrupts you internet connection.

Cable Modems share bandwidth with your neighborhood. Like a hose with a bunch of holes in it. The more people on your loop that have Cable Internet the slower your download and upload times are going to be. It may be that you're trying to play the game during peek periods (5pm-8pm). If Timmy down the road is downloading 15 MP3s your speed goes straight down the tube.

Also, when playing a game like Quake or Doom or something, it's not just the download speed you need to look at. You need to look at your upload speed as well since it's a bi-directional connection, unlike downloading of files or pictures.

I would suggest trying it at different times of day. See if there's a peek time you may experience. You may also want to ditch the cable modem for something that is more unique to you. Like an ADSL connection. DSL is usually slower on the download but it edges out cable on upload speeds.

If things don't improve or you don't feel like jumping ship on your cable, call your cable company. There may be a problem in you local loop.

Default connection

I don't think so. I've recently taken it back to the store and they had to install the NIC drivers and blamed it on spyware. I still have the same problem. I am able to connect my old computer and it works fine, so I am thinking it is the NIC card
