Default Connecting two lines in a cable modem

Greetings everyone, I'm new to this forum. I am having some trouble connecting my laptop to the cable modem. The modem is connected to the desktop which runs on Win 98. But there is also a USB port for the modem which can be hooked up to a second computer.

The brand is Arris Touchstone CM450, and supposedly two computers can access internet at once. When I hook up the Laptop, which has Win XP pro, the Local Area Connection becomes activated, and the little double screen on the corner, when I move the mouse over it, it shows: Speed: 12.0 Mbps. I guess this means it's receiving the connection, but when I start IE, it still says "page cannot be displayed." Anybody knows what I need to do? Thanks anyways guys.

No modem can do that unless you are running a router, or a modem that has NAT enabled with the right configurations. Best thing to do is just to go buy a cheep router and connect both PC's threw LAN.
