| True Techie | I've been hearing alot about P2P services. Some people love it and hate the RIAA. Some people hate it and loathe those who use it. I on the other hand no very little about either side. I was wondering if someone could give me the lowdown on P2P sharing: the pros and cons, why some people love it and others hate it, the legal inplications. Basically everything positive or negative about it. I would appreciate both opinions, both the zealots of P2P and those who think it is an evil spawn. Oh, and mods, please don't erase this post, I'm just curious. I'd like to be able to argue both sides when my friends go off on tangons about why they either love or loathe P2P. Be a more informed citizen, especially concerning computers. Thats why I joined this forum. ![]() |

| p2p isnt about free music, it goes far beyond such limited views. p2p is the free flow of information. Its not only a threat to the MPAA and RIAA, it nature endangers the very foundations of goverment, borders and wealth. Having labelled p2p as one of the greatest potential threats facing the power structures and the leadership of the world, I will say I AM IN FULL SUPPORT OF P2P. The Free flow of information will force a reevaluation of copyright laws and will in the end force a better definition of what one can claim ownership. The Actions of the RIAA have been just as King Canute stood by the sea demanding that the waves obey him, the RIAA and its cohorts will be taught the folly of their actions. It is inevitable, this clash between the past and future is constant. Those who have to gain vs. those with the most to lose. One can never underestimate the power of both information and disinformation.Decentralized, immeasurable networks for the purpose of the distribution of ones and zeros. This isnt going to go away, regardless of how you personally feel about the subject, the idea is here to stay. And in the end, noncooperation will rule the day. Even stopping the flow of information doesnt lessen its potential for havoc . After all 18 1/2-minute gap in a tape recording of a June 20, 1972 brought a president down.

| Admin | I'm not a proponent, nor opponent. Simply put, it is a way to share information from person-2-person. Good or bad? That depends on how it is used. It's a great way to pass on information from one pc to another pc, and many companies use that for employees that work at home or from remote locations. It's also a great way to share information (or files) that are not meant to be shared. Regardless of what you think about copyright laws and ownership, to share something that is sold for individual use is illegal. Positives Almost instantaneous (depending upon your connection speed) transfer of information that is not bound by geographical location and time of day. Negatives The unethical people that share files while hiding trojans, malware, etc., in those files. Dave ![]()
