There are literally thousands of online services that allow webmasters to lookup domain name registration information. These services will tell the webmaster if a domain name is available for registration or already registered. Many domain registrars allow users to place so called backorders which will basically make the domain registrar register the domain name in case the original owner does not renew the domain name in time.
