Default Does It Mean Anything If Your Host Is Far Away From You?

Is vicinity to your host important for you?

Only if you need to physically go there to change tapes/hardware.

My BF2 clan's website is hosted in Hong Kong, but it pulls up faster than this site does (which is hosted in the US).

Nope, not at all, as I don't intend to visit my host's office, it's enough if they five me fairly short response time on helpdesk tickets.
I don't think it's possible to be close to your hosting service provider any longer (at least in majority of cases when you are after some rare type of services or with hosts offering services in their datacenters which are on different continents as in the case with marblehost.com -usa and uk).
So get services from a good host, and his whereabouts is of no importance any longer.

It may influence the hosting speed.

Hardly. As long as the Host has an ample upload rate from the data center to the WWW, your hosting speed will be perfectly fine. Regardless of where you are in the US, you will not see load times drop more than a few milliseconds, but that also depends slightly on the download rate of the viewer's internet as well.

But what if you are in the other country, i mean not in the USA? In Europe for example?

The speed would still show minimal decrease. As Trotter said:

Thre's one aspect whick makes logical to choose a host not so far from you and this is ability to contact them during workday, I mean if you are in the USA and your host is in Honglong it might be problematic to contact their sales department otherwise than late at night.
