Default video editing software

Im looking to edit my home movies so i can put them onto dvd and I need a good program to insert transitions and effects what program has alot of transitions/effects which you can add to your videos, i use PSP to edit my photos, what would be the equivalant for videos?

Premiere the video standard. although it can be very very difficult to get started with, but well worth the effort once it works.
But if your not looking for state of the art 3D effects and complicated layering then Microsoft Movie Maker will do just as good a job.
Download the Latest version with SP2

Adobe After Effects is a notable program as well, you can use Encore DVD for you menues etc. As bigbmxdave said, if you are only looking for the basic transition and text overlay type stuff maybe you should think of using a program such as Pinnacle Studio 9.

I agree to them all, but my personall favorite would be "Bink Video" its free, and easy, you should try it out. But only get it if you want something easy to start with, it seems somewhat beginner to me. If your advanced, Adobe After Effects would be the choice.

Nah man, best simplest and with great cap/filters ect, and free Virtual Dub. Google it.

Those programs are good, but they are all very expensive. Pinnacle studios 9 plus is an awesome editing software for 100 bucks.
