Default Need help opening image files

Im sure many have asked this question befor but i have not had much luck finding an answer so i came here to find out. I have a lot of family pictures maybe 4-5 years old. I had burned them to a CD then tried to open them today. Half of the JPG and all of the BMP files would not open. It registers as space used so theres still something there i just dont know how to open ito or if its at all possible. I tried installing photshop 7.0 which i had used around the same time to see if that would work but it did not. Is there any advice anybody has?

I appoligize if this was the wrong place to post or if it is an annoying question.

Is it possible that the CD got corrupted and somehow some files are no longer readable?

The other files work, the non image and half of the .JPG however it does say this in adobe photoshop.

Could not open (file name) because the file-format module cannot parse the file.
