Hi, im trying to make a slideshow for a website, made up of 8 images, 800x600 and around 40kb each, each image showing for a about 1 second then fading to the next. I tried it with java and it was laggy, trouble is I can't make the images any smaller since I've reduced the quality quite alot already.

I downloaded some flash slideshow generator thing which used my images and made the clip hassle free, but it ended up being like 5mb.

Any ideas how I can make this slideshow and have it run smoothly?

Only flash will come close at that size....

Only flash? Go check out mootools or jQuery (javascript frameworks).

Also, I'm very curious to know how you used java to pull that off, even if it was laggy.

Silverlight would work as well, but that would limit what browsers could access the site then.

Never heard of Java Applets?
