Default .htaccess file

How would I create the file ".htaccess" if windows always tells me that I need to type a filename? (I am trying to make a custom 404 page)

Oh it's easy. Create a .txt file on your desktop and write your htaccess code inside. Then, transfer that txt file onto your webserver via FTP, and once it's uploaded, rename it through your FTP client to .htaccess
