Default How to edit such picture?

I have a scanned picture of document where some (Chinese) characters must be replaced. How can I do that?

Very delicate use of photoshop tools such as the patch tool while zoomed in all the way.

It will take a while, but can usually be done.

I imagine you can do it in gimp, but I'm not sure exactly how.

The patch tool lets you graft one part of an image somewhere else. You can take the areas next to something and patch them over it, sometimes dozens of times, to make it look right.
