how do i make a .gif file smaller so i can make it an avatar?

Does it have to be a .gif? If not, then open in in some image editor and save it as a jpeg or something. If you have photoshop, open it in there and do "Save For Web"

Try going to www.gifworks.com They have an online tool for resizing gif's,I use it all the time and haven't had a problem yet with it
