Is there any decent FREE design programmes for making logos and all that kinda stuff? Could anyone recommend a decent one?

Well because most logos should ideally be made in vector, you'd need a vector program for that. Although i've never used it, I've head that inkscape is good

Is photoshop expensive? it looks like that photoshop is my best bet even if it isn't free.

Photoshop CS 2 costs upwards of 600 bucks USD.

Those prices are high because graphic design / web design companies basically make their living from photoshop, and a couple other tools. Paying the one time fee, and update costs is necessary for them to survive. $600/copy really isn't too bad if they can do $100,000 worth of sales per license. It sucks though for the home user...

It's expensive because it has no real competition other than the GIMP, and people automatically assume that since the GIMP is free it can't be as good as Photoshop. That isn't true as both suites have their strong points and their weak ones.
