| Cricket Photo OK, i have absolutely no expereice with photography but i decided to have a go with my dads SLR camera at the cricket match i went to yesterday, this photo was pretty much pure fluke, those who know about cricket would know that the ball you can see just above the stump was travelling at about 85mph

| Re: Cricket Photo It's not that it's a bad image, you captured the moment and action, it's just that there's a lack of separation, whether it be from bokeh (look it up) or tone.
In this image, there's no bokeh to separate the athlete from the crowd, Now you don't need bokeh for seperation, you can use tone as well. Take his legs for example, you can see the contrast separation from the green grass that clearly shows his legs, while the top half of his body gets lost in the crowd.
Other distracting and bright elements in the scene that compositionally add nothing are the advertisements, they are of similar brightness of the people, yet larger, so that's the first thing the eye goes to.
A wider aperture, depending on the optics would have created some bokeh behind the subject, and would have also ensured a faster shutter speed to the point where you would have frozen the racket.
You shot this at 1/500th of a second at f/6.3, ISO320. Your dads sony was in the green auto mode, it shouldn't be, it almost completely negates the use of an SLR over a point and shooter. Next time, switch to Aperture Priority or Manual and put your aperture as wide as it goes (most likely f/5.6 at 200mm, if not, than f/2 or f/2.8). It's all about the perspective control. |
