Default Alternative to homesite

I've finally gotten a book overviewing html and the implimentations of such and have decided that a pure html code editor would be better than dealing with a program such as Dreamweaver or with the oversimplification of Notepad. Homesite appears to be the perfect alternative with simplistic initiations and alterations to code, but it isn't worth 100 dollars given its simplicity. Is anyone familiar with any free alternatives to the program that will make simple code editing easier than it currently is?

I use Editplus, it's very nice.

It handles:
HTML
CSS
PHP
Perl
Java
Javascript
C/C++
JSP
VBScript
XML
C#

Of course you can edit other formats, but it won't have the special colors and whatnot.

It's not free, but it kind of is. You have a 30 day trial, but you can continue using it after the trial is up - it just bugs you to buy it.

EditPlus Text Editor, HTML Editor, Programmers Editor for Windows - Welcome!

HTML-Kit is free and what I started out with years ago. Personally, I think this is just as good or if not better than Home Site 5.5
My progression:
HTML-Kit
Home Site 5.5
Dreamweaver

Cheers,
