Default old ipod

i got a 10 gig ipod from a friend. he gave me the ipod and a regular firewire cable for it. my laptop doesn't have a port for the big 1394 cable, only for the tiny one. so i went to staples and got a usb cable for the ipod.

i get home, connect the ipod and everything is great... windows recognizes it and installs it's drivers and whatever.. then itunes pops up and says there is a new ipod software version. i install that and now windows can't recognize the ipod and what not.

i can't turn the ipod on.. it just comes up with a screen telling me to plug in the dock. is there a way i can reset it or something?

well all i did was charge it with the wall plug i have. it works just fine now. but for some reason pluging it into my computer completely drains the battery... isn't it supposed to charge when it's in the computer?
