Question MPEG-2 codec for QuickTime

I am doing a school project and apparently I need an MPEG-2 codec for QuickTime. Do I need a specific version of QuickTime and how do I get the codec. I heard that you need to pay for it, which is really dumb - I can't justify NZ$40 for something that may not even work and if it does, something that I will only use once. Is there a third party codec somewhere perhaps?

Default

I don't think it's as easy as that, because iMovie only uses QuickTime doesn't it?
