Default mac OS X

i am just getting a prompt when i boot up my mac its also giving me a happy mac with a "?" with is can anyone help me please

That means the ROM cant find the OS.

Unfortunately its very hard to remedy the situtation without reinstalling the OS.

Is it a dual boot mac? (meaning does it run 9 and X?)

If so, you can hold down the option key when you hear the gong sound at startup. You will get a prompt to select your OS and then the computer should start up accordingly.

If you have OS X installed on your Mac, then when you boot up, hold down command (apple) and 'X' and that forces the mac to boot up using OS X.
