I don't know of any that convert avi files, but I can look.

Why not just play the avi files? Is there some reason they must be converted?

Well maybe I dont need them converted. I've had this problem before. Most .avi files play just fine but I get this message when I attemp to open some: QuickTime cannot open the file: "Transformers 01 - More Than Meets the eye 1.avi"
it is not a file that QuickTime understands (-2048)

Sometimes I also get a message from others telling me that QT is missing some components. I dont see why because it plays everything else but I apparently need something so how do I find out which ones I need?

Check it out!
This is supposedly the most inclusive file converter made just for Mac.
They offer a 15 day free trial and I think its a $25 shareware fee, but I think its well worth it if you plan on doing alot of video/audio editing/converting. This is also great for compressing video for PSP and iPod.
