Default iDVD & external burners

I needed to burn a project I am working on with iDVD. The eMac I have doesn't have a DVD burner, so I bought an external firewire DVD burner.

Why is it that when the burner is installed and on, that iDVD doesn't recognise it?

I have been told that it only supports certain DVD burners, what's the point in that?!
