Default G3, dual boot linux and OS9

I want to dual boot linux (ubuntu 6.06) and OS9 on my G3.

i tried to boot off the OS9 CD so I could use the disk setup utility to format and partition the HDD into 2 partitions. I cannot get it to boot off the CD. It always boots off the HDD, and so i cannot use the disc setup utility, as the disc is in use...

any ideas?

Hold C while you boot off the Ubuntu CD, until it comes to the yaboot screen.

EDIT: Hang on just a second: is this a Beige G3?

All the Beige G3s were Old World Machines, and Ubuntu will not run on them. You will need to get Debian, or an old release of Yellow Dog or something of the sort. Since it is still actively supported, I recommend going the Debian route.

Installing Linux on an OW machine can be a pain in the butt (I speak from experience), so I suggest you really read into it before you start trying stuff out.

OK, will do.

another thing, does OS9 have any screensavers by default? i cant find anywhere to set them, and would rather not leave it on the desktop on the CRT all day long....

http://pure-mac.com/screensaver.html

Afterdark and Darkside are the best. Darkside would probably be your best option, since in my experience it's more OS 9 friendly, and uses a good deal of Afterdark plugins.
