They are NOT the same thing at all. Firefox is a Mozilla (Gecko) browser. Safari is based on KHTML.
It's unfortunately true that Firefox on the Mac platform has lagged behind it's Linux and Windows equivilants, but I expect that to change soon. If you want a Mozilla-based browser that functions extremely well on OS X, try
