Default Extracting content from DVDs

I am in a media studies course at school and as part of an assignment we have to make a documentary. I would like to include about 30 seconds of a New Zealand television series in the documentary. The only issue is that it is on DVD.

Is there a way (either using PC or Mac) to extract some scenes from a DVD (one that is encrypted in this case) that can then be added into a movie editing suite such as Windows Movie Maker, or iMovie.

From my understanding, copyright laws get a little wishy washy when it comes to eductional use so I am not sure of the legality of this process. I am not interested in doing this for personal use after I have finished the documentary. I would also appreciate help - if you don't want to help me with my project then please don't post on how this could be/is illegal.

Next time you want to increase the number of posts you have, can you be helpful in the process, or at least be asking for help. Otherwise, stop 'bumping'.

I do not know why he is bumping messages. Is it something common that happens? I don't know, I just saw it and it peeved me a little.

As for MacTheRipper. I was able to download it and rip the section of the DVD that was needed. I was amazed at how simple it was to use, yet how much you could get it to do.

Unfortunately, I do not have a MPEG-4 encoder on the eMacs which means that I can't add the file into iMovie or anything.

Do they have free QuickTime encoders/codecs on any of the other planets that you have been to?

I personally use Adobe Premiere and Encore, they are supreme to what the Mac has to offer. (On a side note, I once tried using Microsoft Moviemaker but stopped after it kept crashing every 2 minutes). However, the other people who are also doing this project at school have enlisted my help.

The problem is; my limited expertise is further limited to PCs. Turns out that the school has bought DVD Studio Pro 3 and QuickTime Pro, which means that I can successfully extract the content (which I had done) and put it into iMovie (which I couldn't do until now). iMovie's not great, but for people that don't use a computer often it will have to do.

Although I was wondering if you would be able to offer assistance for a different matter that has cropped up...

How do you import a movie you have made from iMovie to DVD Studio Pro 3?
