Default crossword making how to

Hi this is a question on behalf of my husband who has a contract to supply cryptic crosswords to a business magazine in Australia. Using a grid from Microsoft Word the tedium of filling the black squares rather takes the fun out of the job. Does anyone have any clues re either a program, (he has 'done a google' and found most wanting, too immature mostly) or how to make a shortcut. Although he came reluctently to computers he is really pleased to be on Macs. He can be contacted on mungojourno@yahoo.com.au. He is running on OSX3.9 on an imac 500MHz with 384 RAM. I have several including a G5, G4, original TI and a laptop 1GHz with 1.25 Ram both the G5 and the laptop are running OS X 10.4.8 so he can use any of these as well.
Thanks and if this is in an inappropriate forum please advise. Dogsjenny

Use the Gimp (www.gimp.org) to draw a grid, and use the paint bucket tool to fill in the squares. Just click in the squares you want to fill with the paint bucket.
