Somehow i just dont see for simple things like Word Processing Linux is difficult to use.
There's always Mandrake... well now Mandriva. But in all honesty, I don't think any Linux distro is there yet for normal desktop use. Maybe if Linux had a five year head start they would be competing with Windows, but not now. I will say this, the difference in east of use with Mandrake 9 and 10 was impressive. 10 is quite a bit better IMO. Hopefully other Distros are progressing just as fast.

Not to mention that fact that Linux is a derviative of UNIX, which is the software that pretty much runs the internet (Im not talking file servers, Im talking backbones here, the real broad stuff).
One thing that I would like to see (now with this Intel chip/Apple deal) is a version of OSX for the clones out there. Thats something I would actually pay for. FreeBSD is great and all, but I don't see it hitting the desktop en masse.

What about Linux for businesses and schools. The schools have thier Coordinators to install Linux so thats the hardest part. But then, there is the specilised software that Linux doesnt have.

I heard some School that switched to Linux/Openoffice and they provided the teachers/students with lessons that teach them how to use them. Even though its pretty easy to use it.

That, I think is a great idea. Saves the taxpayers money, and keeps the script kiddies from executing their junk (from dad's PC) off the network.
One way to prevent viruses? Use an OS they don't run on.

Yes, but many sysadmins at schools think that the world revolves around M$, and wouldn't dare change.

Pity, isn't it?

There's gotta be some way to fix that...

The admin at our school also is a "intel fanboy saying that intel are more reliable and last longer, but there are no differences between them

Sadly, this is really true. IT guys hamper the development of corporate networks a lot of times because theyre really quite lazy and all they want to do is maintain the network and not really do much to improve it until theyre forced to either by the people who pay them or by system failure. Ive seen it at my dad's office. For a while, a majority of his office was running P2 era computers and software up until about the time when Windows XP came because I think the IT guys were too lazy to take the initiative in asking for and installing new systems. They have their stuff together now, but for a while I was quite worried that my dad would be running in the stone age for years...

So true...

From the IT department: I know some people who work at this company. The IT guys are like 75, 70, and 65. They got in a brand new IBM server, but weren't sure how to use it, so they hired guys to set the server up to emulate the IBM System 360 so that they could use it.

Laziness is terrible, isn't it?
