Exclamation XP restarts after user log on

Help.

I've recently set up a wireless network of 16 laptops with 1 wireless 54Mb access point.

Location: Primary School

All running XP Professional.

Server running Windows 2003 Server.

Group policy settings applied to all users to prevent access to things that children shouldn't mess with(!)

Problem: SOME machines restart when the user logs on and they have to log in again. Then it starts up and everything is fine.

OTHER users get to the screen 'Applying personal Settings' and it just hangs and doesn't log on.

HOWEVER when logging on as Administrator, there is absolutely no problem whatsoever. Logs on fine.

I checked the Event Log and found a 'Folder Redirection' error. Could this be the problem? If so, could i have some advice on how to set it up properly using shares, permissions etc...?

It says that there is a problem directing to 'Start Up' or something.

ITS DRIVING ME NUTS!!!

mr_maria, first of all, welcome to Tech Forums, and thanks for providing enough detail on your specific issue, it really does help us troubleshoot easier.

Here are a few question...

Are you using roaming profiles on the domain?

How is the connection strength on the laptops that stay on the "Applying Personal Settings" splash window?

What policies do you have in place (Win2k3 policies, not IE policies)?

I think we're using Roaming Profiles... How do i check?

Also, the policies are win2k3 policies and not internet explorer.

However, i have included a BIG list of Internet explorer links in the Favourites folder settings in Group Policy...

Also, the connection strength is good on all the 'tops
P.S. It's a pleasure to join!

If you check one of your users account settings, look for profile section, if you see server share (\\servername\user) then you are using roaming profiles.

If you are using roaming profiles, that IE fav. list will take some time to load since its loading from the server.

Hmmm...the users are using roaming profiles as they've each got a share on the server as (\\Brunserver\34s)

But how does that explain the fact that the laptops restart just after log on...but not when you log on as Administrator?

I've also checked the App log on each laptop and i'm seeing this message:

'Failed to perform redirection of folder Startup. The new directories for the redirected folder could not be created. The folder is configured to be redirected to <\\Brunserver\startmenus\Programs\Startup>, the final expanded path was <\\Brunserver\startmenus\Programs\Startup>. The following error occurred:
Access is denied. '

Thanks for your help Holocron, i appreciate it. x

Seems to me like the other accounts have insufficient privileges to access that directory/folder.

Do you think that would explain why they are restarting?

yep, it could. especially if there is no way for the authentication. check the permissions as well as the GPO and find out what maybe filtering down via inherited permissions. how EXACTLY do you have it setup? as in, how are you setting up and where are you locating the roaming profiles, permissions, what are the Domain level policies at because it will effect all machines.
