Ok first lets get down what you have done. First are you sharing any files? If your not sharing anything your not going to find anything in the network. Now lets get down what you have done.

First how are the systems connected? If you just plugged in a Cat 5 to both computers that is not going to work. You can however cut and reconnect the wires to make it work (I can list that if you need it).

Now I am assuming its not a wireless connection so we can skip that. If you are using a Router without a Hub then you might experiance some problems if you do not setup the Router correctly, if you can set it up then it should allow you to connect the computers, if not then the next best thing is to get a cheap 25 dollar hub and plug it in. But basically you should only be using the router if you want to connect these systems to the internet as well. A hub should do the job just fine if your just connecting them to eachother.

Now if you would post something more detailed I can probably help you further.

okay,
yes, it IS a crossover cable, but i do just have it running from network card to network card. so its like a direct connection with no router or hub.
the firewall is off, and its like nothing is being detected except the fact that there is conection (100mps).
the computers wont ping each other either...

Starting from scratch ....
  1. Make sure both Network cards are working
  2. Check that the CAT5 cable is crimped properly
  3. Since ur connecting them to each other directly .. reensure that the cable's crimped as a cross patch.
  4. See if both network card show connectivity(LED's on the network cards light up)
  5. If ur using DHCP, then install the NetBui protocol too
  6. Now run the networking wizard for XP

Guess that's 'bout it .. Ur network should be up n' running once ur thru with this

Default connect 2 xp comps on network

I am having same trouble. I have 2 computers both running Win XP they are connected via CNet 8 port switch. One is connected to the internet via Toshiba cable modem. One of the computers has a much newer CD installation version on it with sp2 included. The other has been upgraded completely by internet download to sp2 also. Each computer registers itself on the network but neither can see the other. I previously had Win 98 on one computer and the network could see each other ( I had netbeui installed on both the xp and w98) but i couldn't read the files on the xp machine from the w98 machine because i have ntfs on the xp. When I upgraded the w98 machine to win xp sp2, the installation cd now no longer has the option of installing Netbeui. I mention the fact that a network was showing before even though i couldn't access files on either of them. Also previously i got a message on the xp machine saying that I did not have the correct privileges on the win 98 machine to access the files there. Both machines have files available for sharing. My isp only issues one dynamic IP address which I use for the more modern machine. The older machine has the newer cd installation version on it although they should both be patched competely up to date. network cables are straight through. Sensing by the port switch is set to 10mbps full duplex on both machines. Gateway is set to same address on both. Please help with any hints on what I am missing here. Thanks Steve Innes.
