Unhappy www.www.google.com.net

Does that subject line look funny to you. Well it looks funny to me too. Unfortunately, it is all I am seeing on my pc when I try to browse the internet.

I open Internet Explorer 6.0
On XP SP2
Type in "www.google.com"

In the bottom left of IE I see it has resolved to "www.www.google.com.net"

Now don't ask me where the extra w's and the .net are coming from but if you know I could sure use a hand on this one.

HELP.

I have seen this before when internet connectivity isnt there. When IE cant find www.google.com (due to lack of internet connection), it will start putting www and net etc around what you typed in, thinking that you typed something wrong.

Does this computer have any problems viewing any other sites, or is it just this one?

If it is just this one, clear your temporary internet files (browser cache). After clearing the cache, open a command prompt and type the following:

ipconfig /flushdns

If it is all sites, then you must have a problem with your internet connection.

It is doing this for all sites.
As for my connection. I am not sure, I can look into it, but if my connection was bad wouldn't it also affect my computer downstairs?
I am also running Netgear wireless router.

It wont necessarily affect both computers. One might not be getting signal from the wireless router, at all.

Has it always been like this? Or has it been a recent thing?

Wouldn't you know it but the Norton Internet Security was set to Block All for Internet Explorer. This confirms my theory about port 80. As it seemed NAV auto update and other background updaters were able to get to the internet just not the browser.

Lesson learned here.
