Default Wireless Signal

I have a Wireless Netgear Router with built in Modem...etc. This is in the hall beacsue thats where the avalible phone line is.

Now one of my computers is EXACLTY above the router....but it recieves a "Low" or "Very Low" signal. why is that. I have tried changing the Channel on which it is broadcasted on. That makes no effect.

I have four laptops and they recieve "Excellent" coverage in most places.

So is there any products which can increase seignal strength.??

Thanks

Stu

Also slightly off-topic but are there any SD cards avalible that enable a Ipaq to access a Wireless router. One for Europe

Hello,

Firstly: http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=WLAN6060 - It's a LAN SDIO Wi-Fi Card. You should be able to find them in several places on the net.

Next your signal strength. Be sure that there aren't any other interfering devices such as wireless remote controls, keyboard, mice or headsets. Also, what is the manufacturer of your wireless products? Some brands of Wireless network adaptors aren't good. However, you'd expect it to work when it's just a metre away. If it has a Wi-Fi mark on it, you know it's trustworthy.

Your PC can be in a small radio blind spot. The same reason why when your at an FM transmitter you have problems picking up that FM station.

Wireless signals suffer from the same issues that standard radio suffers from..

When transmitting from an antenna the signal is typically broadcast out in a horizontal fashion, it could be that because the device you are receiving a poorer signal from the device.

What happens when you put the laptop on the same level as the router, does it work fine ?

What happens when you take one of the other working laptops and put it in the same room above the wireless router?

What type of wireless are you running, 802.11a and to an extent 802.11G have trouble passing objects such a solid walls etc, it could be that the construction of your building is effecting this.

Have you tried to change the positions of the antenna on your router? You could also try to focus the signal in that direction with a small hack, http://www.hackaday.com/entry/1234000870032574/ , I have not tried this at all, but I have heard that it works. Another thought, Could you pull a network wire upstairs through your phone plate on the wall? Does the upstairs have a phone up there too? Maybe you could use that wire to pull a tape through, then pull it back, along with a cat5 cable...

Well, all I can say is that I had this same sort of problem with a belkin router of mine. It is an 802.11b wireless, and I had it between two monitors, and I couldn't even get a signal. You could try moving the router, I don't know if it'll work, but you could try, electronic devices have been known to interfere with eachother. good luck!
