when you say that pinging yahoo.com didn't work, does that mean that you didn't get responses, or it couldn't "resolve the DNS"?

If it's giving you the could not find host message, and you're hooked directly up to the modem, I would say that you need to call your ISP, and talk to them. I think they need to enable something on their side so that your connection works.
