Wired, Non Router, Game Connecting Problem

Hello i am at my wits end trying to get this working but its all a bit beyond me. All help and suggestions gratefully received. thanks

My brother plays a lot of games. His computer is attached to mine via a network cable. My computer is the gateway and he shares my internet connection (cable) He uses software like Qtracker and Hyperlobby to connect to games. Up until last week everything was ok and worked as it should. Since then for reasons unknown to me he cannot ping the servers and they time out. His internet connection however is fine. Qtracker etc works fine on my computer and also on his when he connects directly to the internet (thus putting me off line as we only have one modem) oh its a motorloa surfboard modem. Not a router or anything. It must be something to do with my network settings. Can anyone suggest anything that might get him back playing games online? It's destroying him not getting online.

In the last week has anything changed on your computer? ie new firewall, windows updates, new programs.
