Question Windows Vista, Wireless network setup, problem connecting.

Hi,

I'm having trouble setting up my home wireless network.

My router model is DI-524 (D-Link).

I'm trying to set up the network using my laptop (Windows Vista Home Premium).

My ISP told me the router should be used in EHCP mode (whatever that means).

The structure of the network is as follows:
- A cable from the wall connects to a "splitter".
- The splitter has 3 ethernet ports labelled PHONE, LINE, MODEM.
- The splitter's MODEM port has a cable connecting it to the "line" port of the modem my ISP sent me.
- The modem's "ethernet" port is connected to the router's "WAN" port.

I've already went through the installation steps that came on the D-Link CD.
When I search for wireless networks I can see my wireless network in the list, but when I try to connect it just won't work.

If I connect my laptop to my router using an ethernet cable I can get the internet working, but I can't get the wireless working.

Anyone out there have any ideas??

Thanks.

That means that when your router goes to connect to the internet, it sends a request for an IP address to the ISP. This is the same way that your computer's will request an IP address from your router on your private network.

Anyways, the trouble would be (from your description) only with the wireless. Since you can connect to the internet when WIRED to the router, there is no need to verify and go through the hardware connections, as a problem there would prevent wired access to the internet also.

We have many puzzle pieces, but there are still a few missing... Your router (DI-524) is an 802.11g router. Since your computer can see the network, I can assume that it is using 802.11 B or G. Do you have any security on the wireless in the router? Are you getting an error when trying to connect? What does it say specifically?

Thanks for the reply. Luckily I have been able to fix the problem by doing pretty much the same things I've done before......only this time it works!
I have no real explanation to give. The main difference on this attempt was putting WPA on.
Anyway, it's working now so I'm happy because I've been working on it all weekend.
