Hi,

I set up a friends wifi, with a linksys WIFI router.
she has both a Dell 5150(XP pro) notebook , with wifi PCMCIA linksys cardbus & Dell dimension XPS-t450(win98se). which I will refer to as "the old dell"

I have my own home network, 2 wifi(XPpro) 3 wired(2000 advanced server, XP home, win98se) I can share printers and files on my network, between all PC's. So I know I set it up the same...(not using advanced server, in server client just P2P)

Her Dell XPST450(win98) just won't see the 5150, even though they both have internet access via the router.
I saw she gets a Serial Presence Detect(SPD) error on boot of the old dell.
I never saw this on a PC before.
I ran the home network wizard, on XP pro(it sees the win98se)
and on the old dell(win98se) I was then able to setup a shared file on the old dell.I see that it has the printers & that folder as shared, & the 5150 can print from it.


What do I need to do to get the old dell(win98se) to see the 5150(XPpro)Notebook?

What is a (SPD) error, like the one I stated above, does this have to do with this PC's inability to see the other PC?

go to start, click on find, click on computers on network... type the computer name that you are trying to find and see if that works

you must also make sure that the workgroup is the same for the computers

the workgroups are the same, and when I searched for the notebook(XPpro) it found nothing.

I checked the ro,uter, both PC's have DHCP connections, ethernet cards working, CAT5 fine, a strange SPD(serial presence detect)
error presents itself upon POST...

Both see internet, & I can ping each from the other, what else could cause a win98se PC, to not see a new XPpro notebook?

Anyone??? Obviously they have the same workgroup, for the XPpro puter to print from & get files off the win98se, but not xppro to 98se?

I think it may be because the 98se machine is using FAT32 filesystem and the XP machine is 'probably' using NTFS.

FAT32 Is not compatible with NTFS, but NTFS is backwards compatible with FAT32.

When browsing shared folders, the remote PC can use any filesystem, it doesn't make any difference. There's no need for both PC's to use FAT32.

HI, thanks for the replies.

Yeah, I know all about the differences with filesystems & shares, being windows & Linux user...so this one is stumping me, I even have a network of 4 "wired" & 2 Wifi notebooks, on my WAN, using DHCP as well...
I can see all 98 shares through XP & vice versus.. although on mine, I use a 2000 pro machine as the one to print from for the rest

Think that the SPD error on post could have something to do with this?

I mean say this SPD(serail presence detect) error, is effecting the Networking capabilities of this Win98se puter?

Is this possible? Has anyone seen this error before?

I've probably worked on several thousand PC's in almost 20 years, yet have never come across, this error, upon a post!

k first, as Major said, it doesn't matter when over a network what fat you are using that will only matter if on the same box. Second, you said you can NOT browse to the mentioned computer, however you can ping it, right??? Okay, when you ping it is it also resolving the name (as in when you ping it will show the IP address then after that will show the name of the computer). If it is not then you have a translation problem. also on the XP system what is listed in event viewer? You may want to try removing the netBIOS component and reinstall (reinstall you DUN) on the 98 machine.

I will try as you suggested, when pinging the 98 from the xp puter, it only shows the IP nothing else...

will get back & let you know how it works.
