if the router is a separte box, then the computer you used to connect to it to configure it can be taken away and the router will still function.

You should be able to connect to the router from any pc in the house. Just type in the IP in a browser.

Think of the router as a seperate computer, because that is effectively what it is. Its job is to direct traffic to the correct computer. As such when you configued the router, although you may have configured it from your computer you were changing the settings of the router remotely, you dont install a router on yor computer. Therefore if you unplug your computer from the router the router will still funcion. What router are you using?
