Default Why do ISPs have to charge at all?

So why does bandwidth cost money anyway? ISPs overestimate bandwidth usage cause they know most subscribers wont reach their limit and if you go up the chain far enough to metropolitan area exchanges and network access points, I dont think they have to pay anything? So do you always have to pay for internet access??

Yeah, whats so expensive is all the equipment needed to provide the service, such as fiber-optics, all the server/networking equipment, as well as leasing an OC-12 or OC-48 line, or whatever the ISP uses as a backbone.

Well you only see the cable running to your house

Not the OC 192's, backbone routers, DSLAM UNITS, fiber splicers and the people that are paid to maintain everything

Hmmm...I completely understand, but if every ISP b/w those backbones and end users doesnt really need much maintenance, then are we arbitrarily paying for their profits.

You'd be surprised at how much maintenance is required. And yes we are paying for their profits since that's why these companies exist.

yeah... and they need to have workers to maintain it... and if there's a problem on your connection who would be the ones to fix it? And most of the coax wires are not that durable (if in case they are still using it on telephone lines)

Just a thought...

You have to pay for OC-48 lines, Servers, Spliters, Routers, and most of all a SERVICE. If someone is giving you something they want money for it to make a living. Bandwidth is expensive it doesn't apear out of thin air you know.
