Both are networking devices that are used to connect computers and other peripherals together. The main difference between a hub and a switch is the way that each handle network communication. Let's say that we have a 5-port hub in one room with 5 computers connected to it: Computers A though E. If computer A wished to communicate to computer C, the network communication begun by computer A will be broadcasted to ALL computers on the hub. All the computers, except for computer C will ignore the traffic....because it's not intended for them. But, never-the-less, ALL computers hear the communication.
Ok, now let's say that we have all the same computers working on a switch instead of a hub. If computer A wishes to speak to computer C, an isloated circut between computer A and C is opened up (by the switch) and ONLY those computers intended to receive the message will get it. This decreases A LOT of networking traffic. So, in short....a hub will broadcast a network datagram to ALL ports....a switch will only send traffic to it's intended recipients.
