Default Wep

im running a LinkSys Router on WinXP. my laptop has a built-in adapter card. the card is a Broadcom 54g Maxperformance 802.11g. im have no problems getting into the router and enabling WEP. but, every time i do, it wont connect to my network.

i know that with networks running D-Link you need to go into the router and the adapter configs independently of each other for WEP to work on the network. (i know b/c i just did this on a friends computer running D-Link).

my question is: where are/how do i find the config utility for my built-in adapter? i cant find anything on the company website, or in the properties for it on my system

thanx in advance for the help ppl.

This is actually very simple. You should see the "Wireless Network Connection" under your Network Connections. Go into the network properties by right clicking and going to properties. Once the properties dialog box pops up, click on the "Wireless Networks" Tab. You should see your wireless network (If you have your SSID Enabled on your wireless router, if it is not enabled you won't see any available networks)

Once you see your wireless network (SSID) click on it and then click on "Configure."

Make sure the Data Encryption is set to WEP.

Then, make sure the "Key is provided for me automatically checkbox is UNCHECKED.

Now enter your WEP Key/"Password" and you should be ready to go.

Let us know how things go.

Now, I feel like a COMPLETE idiot...

Well, ya'know what they say... "the simplest things are often the hardest to figure out".

thanx HoLoCroN.

umm.... heres another stupid question.

now that ive encrypted the network, why can i still see my network in the "view available wireless networks" and in the "wireless networks" window tab (seen after clicking advanced in the previous window)? that said, can the other ppl in my apartment building still see my network?

ive already set-up the router NOT to broadcast the SSID prior to posting this thread. but as i just said, i can still see it.

Hmm....

Here is how it goes, once you set up your wi-fi card to connect to an access point, the card retains the settings until there is a major change (Such as an SSID change or a change in the active WEP keys).

When you look at your network connection icon on the system tray (Lower Right hand side of your screen near the clock) you will see the icon for your wireless connection. If you put your mouse over it, it usually pops up the connection speed and the SSID of the wireless network that it is connected to.

If you disabled your SSID, it will be blank after "Connected To:"

Connected To: __________
Connection Speed: Excellent

This is normal. If you have a friend or someone else with a wi-fi card, they won't be able to connect to your network unless you enable your SSID.. AND... give them the keys.

(Of course there are ways around this but it is extremely difficult when there is no SSID, you have to know for certain the network exists, you have to know the router IP address and a few other details to even try to get into a Wi-Fi network with a disabled SSID)

I STRONGLY suggest anyone with a wireless network out there to disable ther SSID, it is the easiest and most effective defense against war driving attacks.

mine still has the name of my network after "connected to"

should i just "up" the encryption to 128? and change the key like once a week or so? short of going over to the neighbors and asking if they can see my network (i never met these ppl) i have no way of knowing for certain if my network is visible or not...

That is completely up to you, the quickest and easiest way to see if you have any unwelcomed guests is to look at your routers setup page under the DHCP settings. Look for the assigned IP Addresses. If you have 3 computers, you shouldn't have 30 IP addresses assigned.. get the drift?
